Sony to exit rear projection TV market

Sony has decided to cease the manufacture of rear projection TVs (RPTV). Once its current inventory is gone it will redistribute resources to the production of LDCs and plasma displays.Rear projection HDTVs can provide a better image quality than an equivalent priced flat panel TV, but Sony believes that the flat panel technology is now what customers really want.

Although rear projection TVs are still popular, Sony follows Philips, Toshiba and Hitachi in removing the technology from its line-up.

The decision will allow the company to focus on newer technologies such as OLED. The current range of Sony RPTVs will remain on sale until back orders are fulfilled with distributors, after which production will cease.

It could be worth keeping an eye out for a bargain as some good deals are likely to be available as the remaining RPTV stock is sold off.

A second film, “Saw IV” will include a Movie Blog feature which allows users to blog about the film via an Internet-connected Blu-ray player.

It is unlikely that this interactive technology will be compatible with older Blu-ray players, although the features should be available with new players, and existing players that can be updated via firmware.

Zepto intros HDTVs with built-in Windows Media hooks

Danish luxury HDTV maker Zepto has wrapped up its year by releasing its new Helios LCD sets. Both the 32-inch A32 and 40-inch A40 have the option of a built-in wireless media center that picks up nearby Windows XP Media Center or Vista Home Premium computers on the local network, allowing the TV to stream video or other content without a separate set-top box. The bundled TV remote switches over to browsing the networked content, Zepto notes. Each set also boasts a unique, adjustable ambient light system that the company says reduces eyestrain without adding too much light to the room.

With the new Samsung LNT4069 in your room, you’ll be able to experience your favorite moves just like you did in the theater. Auto Motion Plus 120Hz technology doubles the frame rate from 60 to 120 frames per second without repeating the same image to make more frames. In addition, Samsung’s innovative DNIe Digital Natural Image Engine delivers a crisp, lifelike picture that is closer to film. You’re getting the real big-screen at home, bigger and clearer.

You and your home theater’s unwavering passion for high-definition have a new ally in unsurpassed audio and video connectability. Bringing you the absolute best in connectivity and connectability, Samsung LNT4069 features 3 HDMI connections - two rear and one side.

Samsung LNT4069 LCD TV

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the only interface in consumer electronics that can carry both uncompressed high-definition (HD) video and uncompressed multi-channel audio in all HD formats including 720p, 1080i and even 1080p. Your incoming media content comes in a variety of sizes, resolutions and formats, and with that in mind, HDMI systems automatically configure to display that content in the most effective format. Since HDMI carries all channels on video and audio, there is only one cable to plug into any HDMI-enabled source and display device. No more complicated cable set-up when installing your home theater system, and no more ugly cable mess behind your components. HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on this single cable. Also, HDMI is fully backward-compatible with DVI.

The LNT4069 comes equipped with the useful HDMI-CEC feature that empowers you control all your devices with CEC compatibility with just one remote control.

Hitachi P50S601 Plasma TV

The P50S601 Ultravision Plasma HDTV offers a mind-bogglingly clear, high-quality, and sharp image with the inclusion of Full HD1080 resolution. And there is no shortage of detail here. Close-ups are closer and panoramic shots more vast and pristine in your favorite blockbuster with the P50S601’s 2.07 million individual picture elements creating a superbly intricate color video mosaic. The PictureMaster processor matches its Full HD1080 panel by upgrading all incoming signals, thus optimizing the picture performance of that source material. In addition, the P50S601’s two component video inputs accommodate a broad range of high-end analog input sources, including cable and satellite receivers, DVD players, VCRs, and video games. The PictureMaster also includes MPEG noise reduction, dynamic contrast, dynamic histogram processing, automatic 3:2 film enhancement, four HD aspect modes, and six SD aspect modes.

The three HDMI SimplayHD (HDMI CEC) 1080p compatible inputs included in the P50S601 give it the highest quality connection and connectability with home A/V devices. Multiple high-end digital interfaces that are 1080p compatible and include high definition video and audio in a single cable connection mean that this plasma TV will fit right in with the rest of your system, and given the rest of its impressive list of features, will soon be the leader of the pack.

The P50S601 doesn’t like to brag about the ridiculously gigantic plethora of colors it offers, and, lucky for it, with a 16 bit, 281 trillion color capacity, it doesn’t have to say anything. The P50S601’s sixteen bit processing increases the number of steps to over 65,000 per color for the smoothest and most film-like image possible, ultimately resulting in that gargantuan color capacity. And to maximize the spectacle of all those colors across the screen, the P50S601 provides a wide range of aspect modes so that you can expand the image to the widescreen format while minimizing visual distortion and eliminating the black bars that may be visible on the top or bottom, or even on the sides, of the screen.
