Mitsubishi to ship LaserVue laser TVs in summer

Mitsubishi to ship LaserVue laser TVs in summer

The world’s first production laser-based HDTVs should be available in the summer and will be split into 65-inch and 73-inch screen sizes; by using laser light in place of normal lamps, either screen is much more accurate and can generate 200 percent of the normal NTSC color gamut while also consuming much less power. The 200 watts used by a LaserVue is said to be half that of a same-size LCD and a third that of an equivalent plasma set. Both screens produce about 500 nits of brightness and take advantage of their greater color depth with support for x.v.

Exact ship dates and pricing for the sets are unavailable, though Mitsubishi says the 65-inch system will be available first with the larger version coming later.

LG looks to Swarovski to bling up LCD TV line

Take a look on LG’s Canvas Crystal X, aka 47LB90FD, a 47-inch LCD TV featuring 1080p resolution, 50000:1 contrast ratio and a base studded with 1000 Swarovski crystals. Now you may be thinking this set is ridiculously expensive, being laden with crystals and all, but Swarovski crystals are really just pieces of glass with high lead content, so first of all they don’t really contribute to a ridiculous price, and second of all, you’ll want to make sure the young ‘uns don’t swallow these.

Available in Korea for KRW3.3m ($3194/£1629/€2053), there’s no word yet on when this most sparkly of tellies will make it to bling-hungry Brits.

HP unveils ultra-accurate DreamColor LCD

 hpdreamcolor-lg.jpg

HP this morning upgraded its monitor lineup with a screen it claims is the most affordable display yet for video editors and other pros working in color-accurate situations. The DreamColor is designed with help from DreamWorks Animation SKG and uses a rare 24-inch LCD panel that produces 30-bit color, generating more than one billion colors; the color range is 64 times that of even better everyday LCDs and also results in blacks four times deeper than normal LCDs. An LED backlight both contributes to a better contrast ratio (1,000:1) and also ensures that colors are uniform across the entire screen.Motion video performance is still strong with a 6ms gray-to-gray pixel response time, a 12ms absolute response time, and support for artifact-free video playback at 60Hz (for North American and Japanese video) and 50Hz (for countries using PAL).

A single model, the LP2480zx, starts the line at $3,499 and includes connections for DVI and the new DisplayPort 1.1 format for computers, HDMI 1.3 and component video for HDTV sources, and both RCA and S-video for basic analog video. A four-port USB hub is built in with the screen, which is available effective today.

ASUS launches EzLink monitors with USB interface

ASUS announced it will soon launch two new LCD monitors, the VW223B and VW202B, with EzLink connection technology. The 22-inch widescreen VW223B and 20.1-inch widescreen VW202B will be the first to feature EzLink, which will allow users to connect up to six of the monitors to a PC or notebook with only a USB 2.0 interface, not requiring additional graphics cards. Both new monitors feature WSXGA+ (1680×1050) resolution. Before connecting each monitor, an EzLink driver needs to be installed on the PC in question. The software will automatically place all windows from secondary monitors back on the main display once the USB connection is broken. Upon reconnection, the monitors return to their previous configurations. Both monitors sport a 300cd/m2 brightness, 1000:1 contrast ratio and 3000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, along with a 5 ms response time. Apart from the larger screen size, the VW223B’s biggest trump card over the VW202B is its integrated 3-port USB hub.

Either EzLink display will be available in black only, although ASUS has not revealed prices or release dates.
