Determine how big your TV needs to be

Tempting as it is to buy the biggest and loudest TV in the shop, you should always consider the size of the room the TV will be in – A TV too big or too small for the seating arrangements in the room is going to do nothing but make your viewing experience less enjoyable.

As a rough guide, a 20 – 27 inch TV looks best from around 3-5 feet, a 32- 37 inch TV looks best at about 6-8 feet, 42-46 inch screens need about 10-15 feet to shine, and a 50 inch monster screen needs about 16 feet between you and it for you to take it all in.

Trivial as this sounds, it is something that should be seriously considered on purchasing a new television, as if the screen is too big for the space that it is in, you will struggle to see the full picture with your eyes at rest – You will find yourself having to physically move your eyes in order to see the sides of the screen – Especially inconvenient for gamers that can’t see the entire situation while they’re playing.

Another main thing to think about when purchasing your new TV is how devices like games consoles and DVD players are going to attach to it – If you’re upgrading from an old fashioned CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) TV you may well find a cornucopia of different sockets on the back of the unit that you’ve not seen before – many of which able to produce better quality video and/or sound than the connections on the previous unit. As such, it can help to invest in good quality HDMI and DVI cables with which to attach things – And if they do not have these connections, consider an upgrade, as you will not get the full benefit of the high definition TV with a Scart connection.

Finally (And arguably most importantly), always shop round for the best price. Quite often dealers will have short term special offers on, or cut prices that mean that you can pick up a functionally identical TV to the one you were looking at for a far better price. If you’re in the high street, make sure you check out a few shops, likewise if you’re shopping at home, always use a price comparison site to help you find the cheap TV that’s best for you.
