Philips will launch a 38mm ultra-slim, ultra-light TV which has its picture processing electronics housed in a separate hub at IFA in Germany, Pocket-lint has learnt. The new television, which will be called Essence, will sport a 42-inch screen and be able to be hung the wall like a picture, probably in a similar way to Sony’s Picture Frame range of televisions.

No details on screen quality however we would expect it to use the recently announced 9000 panel from Philips.Philips has already announced that it will be officially launching the 2nd generation Aurea at the show.

Mitsubishi is better known as a rear-projection TV maker than an LCD manufacturer, but given the slow death of the RPTV market the company has ventured into new waters with the 52-inch LT-52148. And while the company has to tweak their LCD technology an little bit, the new 148 series’ pulls off the incorporation of some high-end high-def technology pretty well. The 1080p, 120 Hz LCD set does have some ringing around objects with the default picture presets, excessively bright green tones, a sluggish menu, and power consumption one can’t exactly call “green”, but with an impressive native contrast ratio, HD video handling and an effective 120 Hz refresh rate, the Mitsubishi LT-52148 looks to be the first of many quality flat-panels.

AOC released three new LCD TVs, the 19 inch L19W861, 26 inch L26W861 and 32 inch L32W861. The monitors provide 3,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio (4,500:1 contrast ratio for the 32 inch L32W861), 720p capability, ATSC and ClearQAM tuning. These LCD TVs also offer HDMI, component, S-Video and RCA input. The AOC L19W861, L26W861 and L32W861 are priced at $299, $499 and $599, respectively

The Sony X4500 series is Sony’s latest top of the range flagship Bravia model. The X4500 series is available in 40″, 46″ and 55″ sizes. All X4500 models feature Sony’s latest Bravia Engine 2 that reduces noise, boosts colour ranges, smooth motion and the contrast for deep blacks. They also come with DRC 3.0 (Digital Reality Creation) with advanced up-conversion technology to provide amazing results on the 1080p screen by enhancing the amount of pixels from non-HD sources such as DVD and analog TV. Pretty cool function allowing smooth transition to Hi-Def, the fact that i still got most of my movies in DVD format. We still have no word on 40″ model price, but 46″ priced for $4999, and 55″ for $6999.

NEC today rolled out two new MultiSync monitors, known as the 32 inch MultiSync LCD3215 and the 42 inch MultiSync LCD4215. Both LCD screens offer 1,366 x 768 resolution, 500 cd/m2 brightness level, 800:1 contrast ratio, DVI with HDCP, 4×4 TileMatrix capabilities, and landscape and portrait orientation. Other features include 15-pin D-Sub, Component Video, Composite Video, and S-Video. The LCD3215 and LCD4215 are priced at $1,199 and $1,699, respectively.

Sharp announced the upcoming release of a pair of its newest AQUOS LCD HDTVs, the 20-inch LC-20E5 and 16-inch LC-16E5. Both are capable of displaying 720p (1366×768 resolution) images and feature two HDMI connections for HD sources such as Blu-ray players.The new AQUOS LCDs feature a contrast ratio of 1,200:1, brightness of 450cd/m² and a horizontal viewing angle of 176 degrees. Traditional RGB video, as well as S-video and component plugs are also part of the HDTVs’ connections. A network jack and RS-232C input are also included, and the TV remotes can also control a connected Sharp Blu-ray player through CEC support.

The LC-20E5 and LC16E5 are rated to use up just 61kWh and 48kWh, respectively, of energy per year.

When the TVs are released in Japan on September 10, the LC-20E5 will list for an equivalent of around $870, while the LC-16E5 will be priced at nearly $780. The LC-16E5 is available in a black or beige surround. A US release has not been announced, although Sharp regularly releases its smaller AQUOS sets in the country.
