The 24-inch screen is Dell’s first to switch from a normal 16:10 ratio to a wider 16:9. Although this sacrifices resolution, dropping from 1920×1200 to 1920×1080, the resolution matches the 1080p output of Blu-ray movies and most other HD formats and results in a larger overall picture for those and most other widescreen videos. An HDMI input gives the S2409W a direct video input for movie players and game consoles. DVI and VGA are equally available for computer input on the display, which is listed with a 1,000:1 contrast ratio and a 5ms average pixel response time. It isn’t given the same color accuracy as displays like the 2709W but still reproduces 85 percent of the NTSC color range. Dell claims the S2409W ships within one to two business days and gives it a $379 price.

VMM Monitor

VIZIO today revealed details of three new display lines, including the company’s first true hybrid display. Known so far as the VMM Monitor, the 26-inch LCD will have dual HDMI inputs but also DVI and VGA as well as RCA audio inputs for built-in 3W speakers. The TV maker promises a more desktop-capable design with a relatively thin bezel, a glass front panel, and the option of tilting or swiveling the image. VIZIO expects the VMM to appear in August for $450, or less than many stand-alone HDTVs at the same size. ECO

A third introduction will see VIZIO debut the Java FHD line, which will give the company’s smaller TVs a more upscale copper-and-black look as well as 1080p at sizes as small as 32 and 37 inches. Both sizes produce a 6,500:1 dynamic contrast ratio as well as three HDMI connections, dual component and RCA video inputs and one VGA input. In case you didn’t know, these HDTVs are the 2nd generation LED-backlit LCD HDTVs that feature 1080p Ultra Clear panels, auto Motion Plus 120Hz technology, a superb 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, an integrated networking technology, 4ms response time, and down-firing speakers. Each LCD monitor also has four HDMI-CEC ports, Ethernet socket and PC input. The 46 inch LN46A950 and 55 inch LN55A950 are priced at $3,199.99 and $4,199.99, respectively.

Sony at its E3 press gathering introduced a Video section to the console side of the PlayStation Store. Users of the PlayStation 3 will be able to buy or rent content from most major studios, including not just its own Sony Pictures but also Disney, Fox, NGM, Paramount, Warner, and other smaller studios. The company is uniquely one of the first to allow TV show purchases in HD as well as in standard definition, and prices them at $2 each; movies can be rented in either resolution for typical prices of $3 to $4, with permanent movie downloads selling for $10 to $20. Also unique is a sideloading feature, Sony explains.
The service will go live this evening; Sony hasn’t announced which countries will receive the service on launch beyond the US.

Mark Levinson’s No502 Media Console is a little bit of design thinking applied to a typical A/V processor/receiver that apparently justifies a ridiculous price. Yes it has some impressive features including an Faraday chassis that doubles as an RF shield, two separate power supplies to reduce noise, Harman International Logic 7 technology, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio, auto-calibration, and 6 HDMI inputs and 2 outputs (though only v1.1), but do these features really justify the $30, 000 price tag. We don’t think so. Must be the Mark Levinson name.
